PASSION WEEK – BANNED MUSIC RESURRECTED! The centre piece of Epsom Chamber Choir’s concert on 23rd March will be Maximilian Steinberg’s Passion Week – a work which was resurrected in the USA in 2014 after 90 years in obscurity, following Russia’s 1923 ban on the performance of sacred music shortly after it was composed. The concert will take place at St Martin’s Church, Epsom at 7.30pm.Choir Director Jack Apperley says: “It is a long-held ambition of mine to direct this wonderful work and bring it to the wider audience it deserves. I am very excited to finally have the opportunity to perform it with the superb forces of Epsom Chamber Choir in St Martin’s perfect acoustic”.Passion Week consists of a cycle of richly-harmonised a cappella choruses in multiple parts. They set texts taken from the Orthodox Church services for the seven days leading up to Easter Sunday. Also in the programme are Tchaikovsky’s The Crown of Roses, Rutter’s A Ukrainian Prayer, Owain Park’s Phos hilaron and the ever-popular spirituals from Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time.
