We regret that we have had to temporarily suspend collections of fridges and freezers within our Bulky Waste collection service.

Why has this happened?

The UK has only a small network of facilities that can recycle and dispose of fridges and freezers. Significant recent issues, including a processor going into liquidation, a series of fires at treatment facilities and increased demand on facilities due to recent hot weather, have severely restricted the UK's capacity for fridge and freezer disposal. 

As a result, Surrey County Council, which arranges disposal of our collected waste, has had to temporarily stop accepting fridges and freezers from our Bulky Waste collections.

Is this just an Epsom & Ewell issue?

No. The problem is with the UK's capacity to recycle and dispose of fridges and freezers. Many councils across the UK - including all in Surrey - have been affected. BBC News article.

What if I have a fridge or freezer that I need to get rid of?

If you're buying a new fridge or freezer, many retailers offer a take-back service, through which they remove your existing fridge or freezer at the same time as delivering your new one.

You can still take fridges and freezers to Surrey County Council's Community Recycling Centre at Blenheim Road.

If you cannot do any of the above, please store your fridge or freezer safely at home until services resume.

How long will this last?

As yet we cannot tell when this UK-wide issue will be resolved. We sincerely apologise for the interruption it has caused to our services, which is beyond our control. We will update you here as soon as services can resume.
