The burning issue of clean air

Date:

Wednesday, 7 October, 2020

As winter approaches, many people are looking forward to lighting open fires or wood burning stoves to heat their homes.

Pleasantly seasonal as they are, smoke or particulates from these fuels can contribute to poor local air quality.  This may create health problems for young or vulnerable people. If you enjoy a wood burning stove or an open fire, please take note and follow the guidelines in this short animation.

“We all have a role to play in keeping our borough’s air clean,” says Councillor Neil Dallen, Chairman of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council’s Environment and Safe Communities Committee.

“A few simple steps can help to limit pollution and maximise the benefits of open fires or stoves."

"By choosing the right fuel, the right appliance and keeping everything well maintained, households can enjoy the wintry warmers and reduce unpleasant side effects.”

The council is focused on making the borough a green and vibrant place to live.  Clean air plays a major role in this and is a specific focus area within the council’s Four Year Vision (https://epsom-ewell.gov.uk/council/four-year-plan).
