The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly. The Covenant’s two principles are that:
- the Armed Forces community should not face disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services in the area where they live;
- special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most such as the injured and the bereaved.

We have committed that we will support the aims of the Covenant. This means:
- that any serving or ex members of the UK armed forces who applies for a job with us will be guaranteed an interview, if they meet the selection criteria laid out in a job advert
- we recognise military skills and qualifications when interviewing for new positions
- our housing policy does not disadvantage armed forces personnel
- we highlight Armed Forces Day and fly the Armed Forces Day flag
- we accommodate reservists’ training commitments (and mobilisation if they are required to deploy) plus we encourage our reservists to participate in Reservists Day
