Listed building consent is in addition to planning permission and protects buildings of special architectural or historical interest. Listed Building Consent is almost always required for external or internal alterations to listed building(s) and anything within the curtilage of the listed building if it existed at the time of the listing. Submission of an application is via the Planning Portal. There is no fee for a listed building consent application but any application will need to be supported by a Heritage Statement and detailed specifications and plans, including of service runs and other minor matters. The Council’s Local List provides guidance for documentation that would be required.
A decision will usually be made within 56 days but the Council’s Conservation Officer may make contact to discuss the application further. The pre application service is available for matters relating to listed buildings and is beneficial given the complexities of each case. Using this service would expediate the planning process. The granting of listed building consent does not assume planning permission would also be granted
