Councillors' allowances

The Council pays an allowance to all councillors in recognition of the time they spend on council-related activities, including meetings. A special responsibility allowance is also paid to councillors who hold a position with additional responsibility (for example, a chair of a committee).

The Members Allowances Scheme for May 2023 - May 2024 is detailed in Annex 2.3 of the council's Operating Framework. The allowance given to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor falls outside the members' allowances scheme.

This Scheme was agreed by Council at it's meeting of 13 February 2020. View report and decision of the Council – 13 February 2020

Separate payments are made to councillors to cover travelling and subsistence costs to meetings and training events outside the borough which are recognised as being approved duties, and for care of dependants. Payments made to councillors in each financial year (April-March) are published following the end of that period.

2023 Review of Members Allowances Scheme

An Independent Remuneration Panel (IRP) undertook a review of the council's Members Allowances Scheme in 2023. The following documents are available to view:

The IRP's report will be considered at the meeting of the Strategy & Resources Committee on 25 January 2024 and Full Council on 13 February 2024.

Payments in previous years

Payments made to councillors in previous financial years are detailed below. It should be noted that as the financial year (April-March) differs from the Council municipal year (May-April) the report may cover the period of an election and as a result may list more than 35 councillors.
