What is a "Bulky Item" of waste?
Bulky items are items of household waste which cannot fit into your wheelie bin due to size or weight. This may include such items as fridges, freezers, washing machines or furniture.
Can my old furniture or electrical items be reused instead of just being thrown away?
The Surrey Reuse Network is a network of charities working with the Surrey Waste Partnership across the county to help recycle and reuse furniture and electrical items.
In Epsom & Ewell, the Vine Project works on behalf of the Surrey Reuse Network to collect good quality furniture and working electrical items from our residents.
For a donation of just £10, the Vine Project will collect a suitable item and donate it to local people in the greatest need.
To enquire about collection call the Vine Project on 020 8685 6640 or email them.
Taking bulky waste to the tip
Bulky items can also be taken to the Civic Amenity Site ('the tip') in Blenheim Road. Individual items may be recycled, depending on type.
If I cannot recycle my bulky waste, can the Council collect it?
Please note that the Council will not be able to collect bulky waste during Christmas and New Year's weeks. This is so that our staff can help with the high level of general refuse and recycling collections at that time. Bulky waste services will recommence on Monday 6 January 2014.
At other times, to arrange a collection by the Council please call us on 01372 732000.
Collections take place within three working days from the date we receive payment and are made between 7am and 3pm. Unfortunately, we cannot confirm a specific time and date for collections (although we only collect fridges and freezers on Tuesdays because of special arrangements for disposal).
Please ensure that the items for collection are left on your property, outside but as close to the road as possible to make sure we can easily get at them. The items must be left ready for collection by 7am on the day after you request the collection.
How much will it cost?
The cost may vary dependent on the amount of waste you wish to dispose of. Contact us by email for details or call Customer Services on 01372 732000. Please note:
- Payments made by credit card are subject to a 1.5% charge
- If you wish to pay by cash or cheque in person at the Town Hall, our cashiers office is open weekdays between 10am and 2pm.
Where appropriate, we may need to provide an individual quote for unusual items or for the collection of large quantities of material. We will arrange to visit you to view the items if necessary.
Residents in receipt of certain means-tested benefits are entitled to three free collections of individual items per financial year. A discount is available for larger quantities of material.
Garden waste recycling
Individual loads of garden waste can be collected on a recycling-only basis. Again, costs will vary dependent on the amount of waste you wish to dispose of. Please contact us as above.
Please note: each request must be first assessed by our Operational Services department, and we must check that the material is not contaminated with non-recyclable items prior to loading it onto the vehicle. We will not be able to offer a collection service for garden waste unless it is uncontaminated and fully suitable for recycling.
How can I pay?
Payments can be made by debit or credit card by telephoning 01372 732000, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.
Alternatively, payments may be made in cash, by cheque or debit/credit card at the cashiers office in the Town Hall, from Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm.
Cheques, made payable to Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and accompanied by documentation which clearly identifies the reason for the payment, may be sent by post to:
