In June 2009, Epsom & Ewell Borough Council launched their Handyman Service.
The Council has compiled a list of contractors who have all been checked by the Criminal Records Bureau and have valid insurance. Work can range from fixing a light switch or clearing a garden, to repairing a boiler or dripping tap.
To be eligible for a free or reduced cost service, applicants must be either:
- disabled and on a means tested benefit
- aged 65 or over and a resident of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council.
Where the work is required for health, safety or security measures and does not exceed a maximum of three hours work, the Council will pay for this. Any time over this will need to be paid for by the client. All costs for materials will be paid for by the client.
For those residents who wish to undertake a major adaptation or building works, the Council can provide a list of suitable local contractors who provide maintenance, repairs and general building services.
The Council are working in partnership with Surrey Supporting People and the Voluntary Association of Surrey Disabled to deliver this scheme.
