What is a Disabled Facilities Grant and could it help me?

Are you experiencing problems climbing into and out of the bath?  Is managing the stairs to reach your bedroom or bathroom a struggle?  Are you able to access and exit your property safely?

If you, or someone living in your property needs help you may qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant towards providing adaptations and facilities.

What is the process to apply for consideration for a grant?

Before you make a formal application, we need both to assess your needs and also to assess whether you would have to make a contribution towards the cost of any improvements.  The first stage of this process is for you to complete a grant enquiry form.

If you require assistance in completing the form, please telephone 01372 732000.

What happens next?

Once we have received your enquiry form, we will determine the level, if any, of financial contribution that you will be required to make towards the costs and we will also arrange a home visit from an occupational therapist to determine what changes are necessary. It is worth noting though that even if a person is eligible for a grant, it does not necessarily follow that an Occupational Therapist will recommend adaptation work in a report, as non-fixed aids may meet the persons long term needs.  If the Housing Grants Team do receive a report recommending adaptation work, a grant officer will then visit you to discuss the grant procedure in detail, answer any questions or concerns that you may have and assist you to progress your enquiry.

We are here to help and advise you during this process but you can find out more by clicking on the link below.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How long is this all going to take?

This will depend on the work involved and whether or not planning permission is required.   We have target times for each stage and this can be explained to you when the grant officer makes the initial visit to your home.

Local authorities have the discretion to place limited charges on adapted properties of owner occupiers where the cost of the Disabled Facilities Grant exceeds £5,000, limited to a maximum of £10,000.  This consent provides the local authorities the discretion to impose a limited charge on the property, if it is sold within ten years of the date the grant was completed, the full charge will become payable.

The maximum grant the applicant can receive is £30,000 in England, less any contribution required after the financial means test.

If you require an enquiry form or additional information, please contact us using the details below.
