Business Ratepayers Consultation
The Council has finalised its budget proposals for the financial year starting 1 April 2013 and strongly welcomes any comments from businesses either on its budget proposals (by 18 February 2013) or on any of our services and service plans for next year (by the end of February 2013).
For many businesses the amount they pay in ‘national non-domestic rates’ is an important factor in their finances. Councils neither set rateable values for business premises nor the rate poundage (how much of the rateable value businesses must pay). These are done by the Valuation Officer and Central Government respectively. The Council does, however, have the responsibility to consult on its spending plans and of course to collect rates from businesses in the borough. Generally ratepayers’ consultation meetings are not well attended. Last year the Council included the consultation as part of a Business Forum Meeting. For the 2013/14 budget consultation is being trialled using a web-based approach with information on Councils spending plans made available as usual but with links to other Council initiatives.
